Choosing the kayak
that is right for you
can be a daunting, yet
exciting, process.
The majority of
Q-Kayaks' range of
kayaks is classified
as 'general purpose'.
Gone are the days when
one kayak can be used
for all facets of
kayaking, but we still
need some flexibility.
All of our kayaks
offer great stability.
That's right, even our
elite 'Torres' sea
kayak. When fatigue
sets in, what use is a
boat without
stability?
Our designer, Max
Grant, has a
background in both a
flat-water racing and
white-water slalom,
having competed
internationally in
both disciplines. As a
result, Q-Kayaks'
range of kayaks
incorporates a smooth
tracking hull with
fine lines and curved
gunnels (edges) to
provide good
response/performance
in a kayak.
Generally, the shorter
a kayak, the more
responsive the kayak
is to turning, and the
longer the kayak, the
faster it goes.
Provided it has a good
hull and/or rudder,
the straighter it will
track, enabling easier
paddling over
distance. A rudder on
a sea kayak assists in
changing waters and
enables you to hold a
good line while
surfing a wave. If you
can steer with your
feet, this frees up
your arms for forward
paddling.
This chart is
designed to help you
decide which kayak is
right for you. We have
rated all of our
kayaks on a scale of 0
to 5 (5 being best)
for performance in
various places - from
white-water and open
sea to rivers and
pools - and for
beginners and
experienced users.
