Marine Revolution. Which Kayak Page. Mac
Boats. Q-Kayaks. Polyethylene plastic boats and kayaks. tough,
un-sinkable, indestructible, no maintenance. Mac Boat
products. New Zealand Made. Versatile boats for work,
pleasure, recreation.
Q-Kayaks use a simple
yet extremely
effective rudder
system on all their
touring boats. The
foot rest slides and
locks into the desired
position. A hinged toe
flap on the top of the
foot rest allows the
paddler to brace
against the footrest
whilst making rudder
adjustments with the
top of your foot.
The rudder blade
and mount are made
from durable aluminum.
The blade is an
aerofoil shape to cut
through the water with
minimal drag. Two
control lines run up
beside the cockpit to
allow the paddler to
deploy and retract the
rudder whilst
paddling. When
retracted the blade
swings up and fits
into a moulded recess
in the stern. A strap
is fitted to retain
the blade while the
boat is being
transported or stored.
Why do Q-Kayaks fit
rudders to all their
boats? In reality
every kayak will
benefit from a rudder
in some sea
conditions, most
evidently in a
following sea from the
quarter or strong side
winds. A rudder is
simply a skeg that can
be continually
adjusted at will to
help with directional
control. World
renowned kayaker, Paul
Caffyn, pioneered
successful rudder
systems for sea kayaks
in NZ. During his
round Australia trip
he increased his daily
mileage by a
staggering 28%
after fitting a
rudder.
The popularity of
rudders or a skeg
varies around the
world. If you're
unfamiliar with
rudders we recommend
trying out this system
to help you make up
your own mind! Please

Deck Fittings
All touring boats come
complete with full
deck lines and a
clever mooring/tow
line at the bow. As
standard Q-Kayaks fit
self rescue straps
across the rear deck
for added safety.
All carry handles are
specially moulded and
snap down on to the
base so they don't
continually knock
against the hull, all
day long.....
Kayak Sail
Our sail is based
on the type of sail
used on a yacht, so if
you are familiar with
sailing, you will have
no trouble using our
kayak sail. As well as
having all the
properties of a normal
sail, it also has an
adjustment to decrease
the sail area and make
it more manageable in
strong winds (reefer).
Normal SailReefed
Sail
When
the sail is no longer
needed, it can be
lowered to the
foredeck from the
cockpit.
Thigh Brace
Thigh braces can be
added to any of the
touring boats. This
comfortable moulded
support simply locates
under the cockpit rim
and secured with two
bolts at the rear.
